The Most EPIC Adventure, Yet

This post comes to you from Colorado where inspiration flows. Life has been great here as I’ve been skateboarding some rad parks and learning how to snowboard (crossed that off the bucket list!). Yes I ate shit about a thousand times, yes I tumbled down the mountain, and yes I was sore as hell the next day. My friends would not let me start on the beginner slopes (“It’s too slow, you won’t learn!”) and took me (against my will) on the advanced mountain my THIRD RUN. I shed some tears on that mountain out of frustration, but by the end of the day I was making it down the mountain with only a few falls.  I’ve been hanging with my friend Nicole and my best-friend from high school, Ryan. They are so rad to have put up with me and shown me the ropes the past week or so.

My BFF from highschool, Ryan and I on the lift

I’ve also been working really hard here and this little retreat has brought back my working mojo. The past 6-weeks have proved to be very difficult due to some unforeseen circumstances… as in extremely shitty ones.  I’ll get more into that in a later post, but for now… let’s talk EPIC.

Hello Hollywood

My mom has agreed to take my two adorable little doggies while I jet set around the world. She asked me to stay with her and help her declutter her house before I took off.  Since it’s the least I could do, I agreed. I mean… I’m like an expert at this now right? I ended up finding a lot of my childhood crap that I didn’t even know still existed… stuff that I could make a lot of money with by selling. After 3-weeks of cleaning my mom’s house we had our garage sale (her stuff and mine). When I posted on Craigslist that I was having a garage sale to “sell everything I own to travel the world” I was contacted by a producer from a major network. A few phone calls later they sent a camera man to do a little demo video at my parents house. 3-days later, I got the call and I was cast for a tv show. Yes, You heard that right… Jenny is gonna be on tv. How EPIC is that? I can hardly contain my excitement. Like seriously. I’m beside myself. I start shooting THIS WEEK. (Damn shit happens fast in the tv world!) My trip to Colorado has been cut short and my road trip postponed, but no worries I’ll be back in Colorado to finish my trip and see my surgeons. The producers bought me a several air tickets that fly me direct from Colorado to Texas. Once I get everything in order, I’ll hit the road. I have until June to get to the World Domination Summit in Portland, Oregon. That’s my only hard date. I’m having a blast seeing where this spontaneous adventure will lead me, and I hope you are too.

On the damn ground, begging for mercy!

The Survey

Thanks to everyone that took my survey. The results were very eye-opening. I knew where I wanted the site to go, but was hesitant to take the full leap. You guys have given me the confidence to go there by backing what my thoughts were. Thank you for that. I have found my focus the last two weeks, but I haven’t found the right words. I’ve been working with Matt at Modern Audacity to wordsmith my message into a pretty little package for you. However, it’s not ready yet (as I mentioned last week). The kind words you guys all wrote me in what you love about my site kept me going during one of the most difficult and nerve racking times of my entire life.  I came back to the words you guys wrote so many times over the last 2-weeks. It wasn’t anything more than to lift me back up and get me to refocus on what really mattered. Words can’t express the deep gratitude I have for everyone that took the survey. Thank you so much. One of my questions in the survey was, “What can I personally, help you with in your life/business?” Many of you answered this with a very specific task that I would like to fulfill. However, because the survey was anonymous I have no way to contact you or know who wrote what. If you were one of these people then please send me an e-mail at: jenny [at] whereisjenny [dot] com and I’ll do my best to fulfill your wishes. I have to write my e-mail like that because when I don’t I get about 500 messages of spam per day… and that ain’t cool. Sorry for the annoyance. I answer every single e-mail so feel free to write me at anytime.

Killin’ the Mountain (or the Mountain Killing me?)

I’m so flattered that so many of you are interested in my personal journey. I will continue to deliver on that, flaws and all. I got a lot of requests for an ebook and I must say, that is definitely in the works. However, I want to reiterate that the core purpose of my site is not to make money, it’s to change your life. I have a graphic design business that I’ve run for 8-years that provides the majority of my income. I do make a small amount from this site via affiliates and occasionally promote things, but nothing to write home about. This site is going through a transitional period, as is my life and business so you can just imagine how crazy things have been. I will continue to update you on my progress and by next week will unveil the greatness Matt and I have been working so diligently on. Until then, Keep Rockin’

Jenny is rebooting her life. She is leaving everything behind to backpack the world as a digital nomad. She doesn’t know when, where, or if she’s coming home.

Wow – congratulations! You don’t know me at all (Hi – I’m Maria from Iceland) but I’ve somehow suddenly become obsessed with reading everything I can about Minimalism/Simplicity and keep ending up on blogs by location independent (for lack of a better term) bloggers. I’ve often wondered HOW in the world all these people make a living (yes, affiliate marketing, I know :)) – and it’s just so insanely cool when things like this happen. It’s like the Universe is taking care of people (and I REALLY don’t even believe in things like that)

Anyway – best of luck to you – look forward to reading more about your adventures :)

    • Jenny

Thanks Maria. I’ve been location independent for 8 years with my graphic design business. I can freelance my work from anywhere and my clients are used to having a remote working environment with me. So it works for both of us. The internet continues to make this more and more possible. I do some affiliate marketing, but it’s not the only way to make a living online.

  • Jack and Jill Travel The World

That’s very exciting, Jenny. Can’t wait to see you on TV!

    • Jenny

      :) Thanks.

  • Justin Hamlin

That is freakin amazing. That is a hell of a way to head off on a trip to cross an item off of your bucket list! Just more proof that some of the most amazing things can be completely unplanned.

    • Jenny

I have “Be an extra in a movie” on my Bucket List but I guess having an episode on tv will suffice to cross that one off. ha

  • Breakaway Backpacker

YAY YOU WENT PUBLIC!!! I am so happy for Jenny that is so fucking awesome. If anyone deserves it is you. You are a great person with a huge heart & just fucking amazing! I am glad you got your mojo back & out of that funk & am excited to continue reading/talking about your adventures!!! Keep it up.

    Love ya,

    • Jenny

Thanks Jaime! You know I love ya.

  • Patricia GW

Jenny on TV! Yay!!! That’s IS epic!! Congratulations, girl! If anyone deserves it, it’s you!

And you’d better let us know when we can watch!

    • Jenny

Will do. I don’t really know much right now.

  • Gray

Wow! Congratulations, Jenny! That rocks. Can’t wait to hear more about it.

    • Jenny

  • Nick Laborde

That is bad ass. I’m really pumped for you. Sounds like you did a a hell of a lot better job on the snowboard then I would have. I would have to start on the kid slope 😉

    • Jenny

Dude I was sooo pissed they took me up the advanced mountain. At the top there were all these huge jumps and stuff and I was like OMFG. Are you kidding me? Kill me now.

  • Ags

You got an awesome story to tell and I’m glad you’re getting the chance to share it with the world through another communication medium. I’ll be shooting you an e-mail as soon as I remember what I wrote down on the survey thingy haha I’m excited to hear about your travel plans and what cities you will be hitting. I need to snowboard too, been dreaming about it for a long time now. Doesn’t help I’m scared of falling and breaking something. Blame my grandma on that one. One more thing to conquer!

Wishing you an adventure filled trip! ^.^

    • Jenny

Your body is more durable than you think! I am definitely sore from snowboarding and I tumbled down the mountain many many times. It’s sooo fun though. Once you get the hang of it.

  • Joel Runyon | [BIT]

Remember that one time you’re famous??? So cool Jenny. Congrats on the gig!

    • Jenny

Yeah. I’m super stoked. Can’t wait to go through the experience.

  • Christy @ Ordinary Traveler

That’s so awesome! Congrats on the tv show! Glad you enjoyed snowboarding. I went through a similar situation when I was just learning how to snowboard. My friends insisted the advanced run was not that difficult and I proceeded to fall on my ass and could have sworn I broke my tail bone!

    • Jenny

The advanced run was a bad idea. THERE WERE HUGE JUMPS! It was super steep and really fast and that was really scary. I fell more times on that run than any other and left some tears on that mountain.

  • Kathleen

Once upon a time in Austin, I said, “You’re one to watch,” and now we all really can :) Congrats Jenny, I love how you live life wide and strong!

    • Jenny

Thanks Kathleen. Glad to have you around. :)

  • Christy @ Technosyncratic

Woohoo – congrats!! ALSO, you look badass in your ski outfit. 😉

    • Jenny

Thanks. It was all Nicole’s old gear and Ryan’s helmet and goggles. Thankfully, we’re the exact same size. :) The jacket was quite large and long which made it difficult to move around at times, but can’t really complain.

  • Federico

Congrats Jenny on the TV gig! That is one strike of luck! Have you considered wearing a t-shirt with your blog’s logo and name on the due date to advertise Where is Jenny for free? And yes, snowboarding is good fun, as a surfer myself I also enjoy sliding down snow slopes and trying a few tricks along the way even though I’ve only done it a few times. And by the way, can you do inverts or McTwists in a half pipe? I was more into street, and at the end had great fun doing handrails :)

    • Jenny

I don’t think they’ll let me where a t-shirt like that, but yeah I wish. Snowboarding was a blast and I want to learn how to do the jumps, but one thing at a time eh? I can’t do mctwists on the vert ramp, but I can do backside and frontside airs over coping. My favorite thing to skate is mini ramps and even more so if it has a spine.

  • The Dropout

Congratulations Jenny! What an exciting adventure you’re having — before you’ve even left the US! Well done. I’m following your story with interest as I try to make myself a location independent profesional. You’re an inspiration.

    • Jenny

Glad to have you around. I think you will enjoy the upcoming changes to my site. My posts will be geared specifically to help others become location independent, find their passion, and start businesses. :)

  • Ali

Congrats! Sounds awesome! Glad you didn’t hurt yourself too bad from snowboarding.

    • Jenny

I was really really sore for 3-days. Like couldn’t move sore. The body is feeling much better now. :)

  • Kim

TV?!?! Whoa! Congratulations!!! When can we learn more about this new, EPIC adventure?

    • Jenny

I KNOW RIGHT! I start taping tomorrow, but my flight was canceled so we’ll see what happens. I’ll post details as soon as I’m able.

  • Sabina

The TV thing is very, very cool. Congrats! And of course extra income to help you realize your dream. Awesome!

    • Jenny

      Thanks Sabina! :)

  • April

Very awesome news, Jenny! I can’t wait to hear more about it.

    • Jenny

You bet I’ll report it as soon as I can!

  • Ruth Rieckehoff

Congrats Jenny!!! Great to see you are having an awesome time.

    • Jenny

Thanks! I’m sooo stoked. It starts tomorrow as long as I can make it back to Texas! Snow everywhere!

  • Darrin

Your site is a great reflection of your life. And, since change is inevitable, your blog will adjust as you transition and grow. It has been a great joy to experience a part of your life through your words. I look forward to hearing more of your awesome journey.

    • Jenny

Thanks for being part of my site. Happy to hear that you enjoy it. Comments like this is what keeps me going!

  • Kelly

Cool Jenny! Go you! Can’t wait to see what the show is all about. Can you tell us more or do you have to keep it on the DL for now?

    • Jenny

I have to keep it on the DL. :(

  • Islandmomma

I am so thrilled for you! You most definitely deserve this. Lots and lots of luck!

    • Jenny

      THANK YOU!

  • Andrea and John

How exciting! TV producers read Craigslist for leads and ideas? Far out…congrats! =)

    • Jenny

It’s so strange how this fell in my lap. Really is.

  • Mike Lenzen

    • Jenny

      Thank you!!!

  • Ricardo Bueno

Ok, a TV show? That’s freakin’ epic and awesome!! So wanna give you a hi-five and a hug! CONGRATULATIONS!!

Now, in regards to snowboarding, the Colorado slopes look awesome! I’ve been snowboarding for 11+ years. And I have to agree, sometimes, the best way to learn is to just go straight to the top. The sooner you just accept the fact that you’re going to go fast, the easier it is to get over that fear and just go. It’s the fear that makes people fall. Once you over come that, it gets so much easier!!

Congrats Jenny! Excited for everything that you’re doing :-)

  • Jonathanfigaro

Hey Jenny…how long have you been snow boarding for?

    • Jenny

      3 times now. : ]

  • Nomadic Matt

snow boarding? Everyone knows Skiing is the real sport!

    • Jenny

      Pffff. whatever. 😉

  • yTravelBlog

Can’t wait to hear more about it and see you on TV. Colorado is my fave US state so I’m really jealous of you right now

    • Jenny

Colorado was epic… I didn’t get to see much though because it was more of a retreat to get stuff done!

  • yTravelBlog

Can’t wait to hear more about it and see you on TV. Colorado is my fave US state so I’m really jealous of you right now

  • Jack

Jenny, that is SO rad! I’m glad you’re in the experiencing adventure stage rather than the planning stage now! Seems like just yesterday we were both in Houston and now I’m in Laos and you’re a superstar. Good times!

I’m in Laos, which is why I’ve been so quiet on the ‘net lately. Good Internet is hard to come by. Makes me really appreciate that awesome cable connection I had at my old apartment… :)

Snowboarding is SO much fun. Every time I do it I faceplant though. Sounds like you’re doing better than I did…

    • Jenny

Yeah… it’s crazy how plans have changed on a whim, like 10 times since I started. Love it.

  • Lindsay

Jenny you’re gonna be famous! SO pumped for you! It’s true that hard work and good content really does pay off eh? haha :)
Kudos on the snowboarding as well. I have to stick to snowshoeing and cross country due to my fear of downhill skiing after a traumatic experience in grade 7.

    • Jenny

When you do epic shit, epic things happen. ha. For real though, I was lucky that this opportunity fell into my lap.

  • Sofia – As We Travel

Awesome, can’t wait to see what the show is about!

  • Rebecca

Arghhh so exciting! Can’t wait to find out what the show is and what it’s about!! How totally random!

  • Lori – The Unframed World

I love the pictures! Colorado looks beautiful. I’m pretty sure you were killin’ the mountain =)
