The Secret to Happiness

Filed under: Bucket List / How-To / Life / Philosophy / Resources / Thoughts By:

Everyone has people who influence their lives from time to time. For me, mine was named Miles. Like many others in the United States I was taught that I was supposed to follow a certain path in life.

  1. Go to college.
  2. Get a job.
  3. Buy a house.
  4. Get married.
  5. Have kids.
  6. Retire.

Livin' it up on a Caribbean Cruise

I wasn’t too excited about that path. Maybe you aren’t either.  When I was on a celebratory cruise to the Caribbean (for graduating college) during a transitional time for me I had ‘dreams‘ of working at a big ad agency. That is, after all, what I was supposed to do.

I decided to take an introduction to scuba diving excursion off of the cruise line. We would learn how to use scuba equipment and get to go 20 feet or so down to explore the ocean. I had always wanted to learn how to scuba dive so you can imagine my excitement. I was doing something new. That’s when I met Miles.

Miles. The boy that changed my life.

Miles had this aura about him that I can’t really explain. He was happy from within, as if his heart was singing of joy. Miles had this way about him that you could see and feel that he was absolutely, without a doubt, having a hell of a time. Being in suburbia most of my life with lifeless people only caring about what brand of clothes you wear, this was completely new to me. I was intrigued.

I wanted to be happy. I remember as a kid looking outside my window and wishing on every star in the sky for happiness. I was depressed. I was in a place I didn’t belong and I had unresolved issues. I would wish for one day of happiness thinking that all the days of pain and unhappiness would be worth that one day. What I didn’t realize is that everyday could be happy, not just one, if I wanted it to be. I thought that getting certain things would make me happy, but they didn’t. Instead, I learned it was about appreciation, choice, and options.

My first scuba dive!

Our entire scuba diving class was enthralled by Miles. He had an effect on all of us. His heart sang so hard and loud that you couldn’t help but smile and be happy around him. I wanted to be like that! I wanted my heart to sing too. Miles story is a simple one, much like mine now. He was living life the way everyone said he should. Then one day he got fed up, said fuck it all, quit school, sold his crap, got his teaching PADI (scuba diving) license and bought a one-way ticket to St. Maartin in the Caribbean. He said, “Now I get to do something I love several times a day and share my passion with others daily.” Can life get any better than that? Seriously.

My initial thoughts were, “You can do that?” Like seriously, who does that? What was really amazing about this moment is it opened up a world of possibilities. Maybe you had a key person in your life help you realize the same thing, if not I hope this blog does. That you realize that you no longer have a path predetermined for you. That you can choose your own path, like a choose your own adventure book. The options and possibilities are endless. My brain started going bananas in those moments. Maybe yours is doing this right now.

Magens Bay - Paradise!

Miles was happy because:

  1. He lived each and every moment to the fullest.
  2. He was following his heart and doing something he loved everyday.
  3. He appreciated what he had, not what he was missing.
  4. He was surrounded by amazing friends

That moment changed everything for me. I began the search for my passions and started following my heart. Rather than look for a job and turn in resumes, I decided to start my business. The same business I run today, Pirata Design. Maybe you want to build your own empire or start a minimalist business? Starting your own business allows you to determine what your life will be like. You are in control. You decide how much money you make, how often you work, when you work, and what you’re willing to work on. That kind of freedom can’t be bought. I know for me personally, I’d rather make less money and have more freedom than be chained to a cubicle day after day. Which do you prefer?

It doesn’t matter where you come from, what your job is like, who your family is, how much debt you’re in, or what your responsibilities are at any given point in time. We all have obstacles to overcome. Mine will be different than yours. What is really important to realize is that we have a choice everyday. Everyday we make a choice to either continue living life in a way we hate or choose to follow our gut, passions, and dreams to our ultimate path of happiness. What makes you smile? What is it you dream of doing when you’re doing something you hate? That’s what you should go do.

My goal is to inspire you to live life to the fullest. To go after your dreams in life. To stop being a victim to circumstance and overcome whatever obstacles you face. At any point in time you can rewrite your story. So what are you waiting for?

Was there anyone in your life that helped you along your path? What are obstacles that you’re overcoming? Please, tell your story in the comments below.

His name was Dave. He was my boyfriend during my sophomore year in college. At that point, he had already been out of college for two years. When I told him that I didn’t want to do what I was going to school for, he was the first one to say “Well, what do you REALLY want to do?” Ummm…no one had ever asked me that question before! And you know what? I actually had an answer! But it was entirely too scary to leave the “path” at that point. It took quite a few more years before I started listening to my heart instead of my head:)

Some awesome photos there, really :)

I’d love to go diving also…:) Is it a costly pleasure?

    Jenny

You haven’t missed out on anything. I was really good and 1 and 2 and worked at a great ad agency for years, on some amazing campaigns.

But in the end I just couldn’t move on to 3-6. And I’m happy I finally realized that.

Jenny! It is always good to keep stuff in perspective isn’t it? Whenever you realize that you are chasing someone else’s dream it is time to change focus. :)

  • http://www.livecollarfree.com/ James Schipper

I hope you never lose sight of the fact that you are also going to be “Miles” to many other people by having this blog and doing what you do.

By my count, that’s at least 17 different kinds of rad as hell.

Great post! I always try to follow my heart and dream big, even if it means doing something that most people would think was “crazy.” Now I’m two years into traveling the world after quitting a cushy job in New York City and loving life again! Congrats to you for following your heart and dreaming big!

  • http://followmeeverywhere.com Ryan Martin

Totally awesome article. I know exactly how u felt. Mine was a newspaper article I read about a couple who sold their stuff, quit their jobs, and decided to travel the world. I thought “That would be amazing,” to myself then after a while realized I could do it to! So got my finances in order, quit my job, and took off. I never looked back. That was two years ago now. I’ve lived in Hawai’i for a year, traveled around the world in 2010, and now looking for the next adventure in 2011. So true that life is too damn short to be NOT doing what you want.

  • http://www.travelswithanineyearold.com Theodora

Jenny, it’s great to hear about one person who inspired you to do what you’re doing. It can be done, it can work and, rather than an escape from unhappiness (as people who are happy settled see it), travel can be a journey towards happiness — and a life you’ve never dreamed of. Congratulations on making the leap — and doing it so proudly, so publicly and so happily…

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

I find it strange that not many people will ask you what you really want to do. Many times, they tell you about your responsibilities and various forms of “suck it up.” It really makes you think when someone asks questions like that… gives a completely new perspective.

It doesn’t really matter that it took a few years for you to find your path… what matters is that you took it!

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Those photos are many years old. Crazy to think about how far camera technology has come in just 7 years! I was thinking about apologizing for the quality of the photos… and just said eff it, instead.

Go get your PADI… the ocean is like a completely different world and to be part of it is amazing. Diving is also very meditative. It took about $500 to get my PADI license and that included course book/dvd, fins, snorkel, mask, and boots in addition to the instruction. You could do it for much cheaper in a 3rd world country, if you didn’t purchase the book/dvd (borrowed/bought used, ect), or borrowed/rented fins/boots/mask/snorkel as well. Maybe around $250-$300. I kind of wish I would have just rented/borrowed it because I’ve used the equipment so few times since I got it. I don’t like to travel with all of that gear, it’s a burden, so it just sits in a box (in process of selling it). I always rent it wherever I happen to be scuba diving anyways. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any additional questions….

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Oh and diving on location (including equipment) usually ranges from $40-$130 per day (2 dives). Sometimes with photo/video/lunch included.

In the Galapagos Islands it was $130 day with photo/video and lunch included
In Colombia it was $50 per day with lunch included

Too often, people are scared to not have that false sense of security at a cubicle job. I have had my uncle and dad both lose their jobs after 20+ years in the same industry, and most at the same company. It hits home, it really does. Especially when these people who are in their 40s and 50s lose their jobs, they have known nothing else.

Now is the time that we all (as 20 and 30 somethings) need to take heed and recognize that this economy isnt doing anyone any favors, and take this opportunity to realize that there is life, job security and happiness outside the cubicle.

Great stuff, Jenny! Miles definitely seems like an inspirational guy, and how lucky for you to have stumbled upon him, and started on this awesome journey of yours!

I have a feeling you’re going to be an inspiration for a lot of people in the future.

  • http://www.katiegoingglobal.com Katie

I think the first person I ever met who made me even realize there was something I could do beyond the 9-to-5 was this girl Susan who I met on a tour in Australia. She worked half the year as a tour guide for a company in the US and spent the rest of the year traveling and I just thought that was the coolest thing ever. It made me realize that I didn’t have to stick with my big law firm job and that there were other options out there.

  • http://twitter.com/Aventuresabdm Sylvain et Audrey

Ending school next semester made me realize some things… I don’t enjoy having a 60h/ week job. I’m not a career woman. And finally planning a trip after years of not being able to made me realise how much I looooooove traveling and that travel is what I love most in life (except for my bf of course). So I brought back this old dream of a RTW, that I thought was never going to happen due to cost. I don’t care how long it takes, I know now that I’ll do it! I’ll work hard and I’ll travel! Following my dreams and my heart was the best decision I made in 2010 and in my life actually! I realized that NOW is the time to do what I love. And I’m thrilled to see what life will bring for me!:)

    Thanks for this heart-touching article!

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Yeah I had dreams of working at an amazing ad agency… that is until I realized what would actually be required of me… that’s when I started my own business. Don’t think I missed out on a damn thing. Thanks for letting me know I didn’t haha!

So glad you found your happiness Ayngelina… do you see yourself ever coming home?

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Thanks for your continued support James. Glad to have you around here. :)

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Congrats to you for following your heart and dreaming big. I think that if people are calling you “crazy” you’re on the right track to doing amazing things!

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Wow Ryan. How was Hawaii. I want to go there to check out the surf and skate scene… I hear it’s pretty rad. Kudos to you to taking inspiration into action. I hope that this site not only inspires, but inspires action. Where are you going in 2011, maybe our paths will cross. ;)

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Thanks Theo. That means a lot coming from you. :) Sometimes it’s hard to put my personal life details out there, but if it helps people… then I’ll tell my story. Your story really inspires me. My most memorable moment reading on your blog was the story of you and Z on the wall where he mentioned everything you did wrong and you guys had a long conversation after that. You’re a great mom to have listened to that, must have been really hard. :)

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

I think I’d go crazy if I was working the same job for 20+ years. However, we must realize the difference in society and standards back then. That was accepted and normal. Now it’s more common for entrepreneurs to start businesses, take risks, design your life… the internet gives us boundless opportunities. I’m so thankful to have grown up in this age. We’re going to have amazing lives because of it.

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

I’m SOOOOO lucky for stumbling on Miles. I wonder if I’d of ever of come to the same conclusion without him in my life (even if only for a few hours)? Think back to some key moments in your life where you did something amazing. What helped you get to that decision?

Thanks for the amazing words of encouragement. I hope you’re right!

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Great story Katie. Very similar to my “Miles” story… someone showed you (via action with their life) that there are more options in life than you realize. :)

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Sylvain. Awesome. I’m soooo happy for your realization. Work towards it and never look back. During that time, try to develop some sort of online business to give you complete freedom. I’m not sure what you went to school for, but maybe you could develop that somehow. Do it on the side, save up money faster, save your change… do everything. Make it happen!!! Let me know if I can be of any help.

Look forward to hearing about your departure date…. ;)

  • http://www.ivorypomegranate.com Kirstin

I fully expected to go about my life in that basic structure, I had this idea that I’d go to college, then grad school (with plenty of study abroad peppered in there, I was planning on spending 5 or 6 years on my undergraduate so I could go abroad!), then get a job, get married by 25, buy a house (or a fabulous apartment in a big city), have kids by 28, etc etc etc. Actually, I would’ve probably been happy to do that, but then I met my dream-guy at 19 in college, who got me a ridiculous job at 20, I had to finish college in 3 years in order to go work in Iraq, used that to pay off student loan debt, and got married last July (age 22) before moving Kyrgyzstan last August to start our own business. And I’m perfectly happy doing it this way as well. So, it’s kinda funny how plans change, but I’m still sort of on the same path? (kids will have to wait until I’m out of KG though!)

  • http://www.travelsofmike.com Mike

Wow, very inspiring. It’s funny how life is taught by your 6 points. It took a major life disaster for me to figure out I could do something different and now I’m traveling Australia then to Thailand. As you note, it’s up to YOU to change your life!

  • Dee

My husband and I and found the website http://www.theworldisnotflat.com/ awhile ago and they inspired us in much the same way. We made our plans and our own blog and then traveled the world! We are back now but it for sure isn’t over! Now it’s become so much easier to focus on what we want to do for ourselves. Just putting it all into action now.

  • http://www.yTravelBlog.com/ yTravelBlog

Amen! Happiness is a choice- makes it really simple to get. Even when the crap is falling down around you in your life you can still choose to be happy.
My brother has always been a big inspiration to me to live my dreams. He started travelling in 95 and has not stopped. It was his stories that inspired me to go and do the same thing, and they still do today.

Whenever I was at a cross roads in my life and did not know where to go next, I would phone him up and he always gave me the best advice about what to do and where to go. It has been awesome to feature him on our site, and to have him be really inspired and enthusiastic about what we do.

  • http://www.twitter.com/Safan_Momin Safan Momin

I am still trying to figure out what my path of happiness will be, but i know that it won’t be a conventional path. I think you already know this but you inspire my a lot, even rubbing off on me positively on stuff I didn’t expect (not buying more crap). ;) Thank You!

Great post Jenny – People like Miles are so addictive to be around. It is my goal to one day be Miles. :)

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

I think focus is the key word. What you focus on really determines a lot of things.

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Kirstin. That’s awesome. Life has a way of changing plans. It doesn’t matter what path you end up on, as long as it’s the one you want to be on. What matters is that you’re happy. If that is buying a house, getting married, and starting a family… then kudos to you. There is nothing wrong with that. I’m mainly referring to that path that people are unhappy with. That want something different. I want to inspire those people to change paths so that they can be on the path to happiness too.

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Thanks for commenting Mike. What disaster changed your life?

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Awesome Dee. Once you do something epic, more epicness always follows. You achieve an “unrealistic” goal and afterwords everything seems possible. That mentality opens up a world of opportunities and possibilities. Life is a hell of a ride!

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Wow. That is awesome guys. My brother has been inspired by my site and has just written his first bucket list. I’m so proud of him. If that’s all this site ever does… then I can be happy with that.

  • http://twitter.com/gomexicoguide Go Mexico Guide

People like that are such an inspiration! I’d like to think that I live by my own terms these days, but it took me a little while to get here. I spent my first 5 years out of college doing the corporate thing but it just never felt right for me. These days I earn less money, but my time is my own and I’m a lot happier. So yes, I definitely agree that I’d rather make less and have my freedom than the other way around. And it doesn’t hurt that I live a simple lifestyle (in Mexico) – so it’s not too difficult to get by on less. ;-)

Re: “He lived each and every moment to the fullest.”

I’ve learned to this this more. I used to be really very stressed a lot of the time. Exercise and well, learning to relax and do the things I enjoy helped me in a big way. The fact is, I DO have a choice, each and every day to do what I want to do and either enjoy what I do or get stressed out and pout about why things aren’t different.

I choice to enjoy my days. Enjoy my decisions. And work my butt off so that it all comes together in the way that I want it to.

  • Tram J. Dinhvu

You are my new hero!!!!!!!!! Thx for being so incredibly inspiring to my old and tiring soul. Now i do have a good reason to be excited about waking up everyday.

I graduated two years ago, got massive debts and student loan to pay for, got no job so i left Los Angeles to Phoenix AZ in my roadster with a few belongings (Hallelujah to Minimalism) in search of my American dream. My dream shattered. I stuck with the job i HATE but gotta wake up everyday included the weekend. I was at my worse time in life. I turned into alcohol just to get some sleep b/c i was so much in stress.I hate my life. I started to hike just hide. I got so fed up with my family riding up my ass with everything(yep, typical Asian family of mine) stable career, husband, house, and kids and all that shits. Jan.2010 i joined the Navy just to get away and may be to be put away too. Half way through training they sent me home because of my hearing loss since i was a kid. No plan B i found myself standing by O’hare in Navy shorts and shaved head.
As soon as i got sent home, I have nothing left but my nothing to lose attitude. No job, money, and no problem. Around that time, i met this dude who is a Navy reject like myself and we just hopped into the car and drove across America. I was charging my battery at a campground in Glacier NP when I met this cool chick, Mel, who was traveling America by herself. We talked about pretty much everything you have written on this blog. That moment on, I know i want to be Mel. Through Mel, I went on and do some research and I found you. In this virtual world I am so glad I found you. Today, i got big plan. The plan is not to follow one.

I know i yapped too much on here but this is the first time i actually let it out. I hope I’ll hear from you again.
    Many, many thanks again…………………………………..;-)

Nice one! This 2011, I decided not to entertain things that would just hinder me from getting what I really want. Despite so many obstacles day by day, I would want to stay in focus – prioritize everything and enjoy. I may be a negative person but I’m taking this year as my new path and outline everything to overcome pessimism.

Thanks for sharing this post! :)

I imagine that living every moment to the fullest is a bit easier in the Caribbean, but it is definitely something that I’m working on myself. We have a choice. We can choose to focus on the negative or the positive and that directly affects the kind of day that we’ll have. I want to have awesome days. I’m sure everyone else does too. It’s a simple mind-set change, but it works.

Thanks for mentioning my post! Much appreciated!

I agree with you, freedom is very important. And if you can be your own boss and totally free with $2000 a month, it can be worth much more than earning $20 000 a month but be stuck in a job you hate every single minute of.

The thing about obstacles is that they are rarely as big as we make them out to be in our head. We just have to jump and see what happens. It won’t always work out the way we think, but more then likely, it’ll be better.

Wow Tram. Thanks for sharing your inspiring story. It’s being open to adventure and opportunities as they come along in our times of… what shall we call it, learning. There were times where I was lost too. Hell, maybe I still am lost. I’m glad you found me and shared your story! I love hearing from readers like you. You had two Miles, your Navy friend and Mel. Maybe you would enjoy this post I did on defining moments. I hope you stick around. :)

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Thanks for the comment. I agree that being negative is easy. I’m that way too sometimes, especially if I’m in a bad mood. I have gotten better about catching myself in those moments and saying, “Hey. WTF? Does this even really matter?” and I think about all the positive things going on. That usually helps me. It’s all about perspective and attitude. It’s crazy how a simple mind-set switch can completely change everything.

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

I love being able to design my life. I wouldn’t change it for anything. I can remember the moment I decided to start my own business… It is a lot of work sometimes, but the alternative to me, isn’t all that awesome. Maybe it’s right for someone else, but not me.

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

I agree. We’re in a completely different realm than our parents were. Not only in technology, but in way of thought. Life is supposed to be a grand adventure. I’m so thank-ful that I’ve been able to have one.

You have a choice with your life. Make the choices that give you the life you want to have.

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Thanks Diggy. Glad you enjoyed it. I can’t imagine a life without my freedom. I value it way too much to sell it out. I’d rather enjoy every second of life, than hate every moment and be full of regret years down the road.

You are giving me a huge kick in the ass to jump start my new venture. I’m brainstorming on the things we talked about. Cheers Mate.

I meet quite a few people like Miles on my trip to the US Virgin Islands as well a few months ago. People who 20 years ago just bought a one way ticket and gave themselves no options other than to exceed. It’s really quite amazing and my thoughts were just the same “you can do that?”

The most important part of the equation is having a strong personal online brand and a location independent income. Since quiting my corporate job in 08 I have been living a simple life in New England. It’s time I see the world too and I’m moving to Thailand to be an ESL teacher for 6 months. That combined with my location independent online income (I’m an affiliate marketer) will allow me to live very well. I might even do what Cody does over at thrilling heroics and base myself out of the south of Thailand for a year or two and travel all of South East Asia.

Anyways, sorry for the long comment! I really enjoy what you do, look forward to seeing your adventures.

It’s a crazy state of being…to make the decision to do such a thing (hubby and I have been on the road since 2009), and then have *this* become the new normal – as in, I can’t imagine ever doing anything else. Sometimes I find it very hard to relate with friends/family that are holding tight to the 6 step program as you’ve outlined above! =)

You need to go out and seek your happiness for yourself; you need to declare your own independence. [...]

What an ode to scuba and the life abroad :) After finishing high school I worked in an Egyptian diving center for a year and has a blast – most of the time. Sometimes even the sun, blue sea, scuba diving can get on your nerves I guess. But it was fun and I’ve been a serial expat ever since. I still did the college & getting a job thing, but I’m still abroad (this time in the US). I love that scuba gave you the idea to change your life :)

The Secret to HappinessHappiness requires a broad foundation of being grateful.  Thousands of things must happen every day just for each of us to live and breath; and thousands more not to live in continuous pain.  We don’t need to be grateful to anything (that promotes greed, a feeling of entitlement), just have the feeling of being wholely grateful. To live without being grateful, is a wholely selfish act and the functioning of the human mind rewards such acts with continuous pain in many forms.~ ethics.support-port.com

I’m much older than you and have lived thru times when I’ve felt that freedom and times when I felt trapped. A few yrs back I walked off a job that was killing my spirit, packed my things on a Friday nite, left my letter of resignation on my desk, tried a few temp jobs, then was lucky enough to inherit few dollars from a long lost uncle. Wish I could say I bought a world ticket, but it was just enough to give me the time I needed to do some soul searching, relocate, and pursue my dream of teaching. Shortly after I got my credential I was diagnosed with cancer. In those moments when I felt death breathing down my neck, I realized that there was. I guarantee of a tomorrow for any of us. This moment is all we have. I love teaching but I knew then that I needed to travel the world as well. I now combine my two passions, teaching and traveling, and have found a balance that works for me. I live frugally, teach for 9 months, dreaming, researching, reading, and writing about travel,
