Staying Happy in Downtown Denver at The Curtis Hotel

Filed under: Places / Reviews / Thoughts / Travel By:

After I had my Thoracic Outlet Syndrome surgery in Denver, Colorado I needed a place to stay to recover and feel at home. After researching Denver for unique hotels I decided to stay at The Curtis in downtown for 5 nights. When I look for a hotel to stay in I tend to prefer a hotel with modern decor, personality, originality, good location, and free wifi. I also like to have FUN! Unlike the majority of high-end hotels The Curtis is bursting with personality, is fun, full of color, and pays attention to the small details. Instead of a boring hotel that looks and acts just like the rest, The Curtis hotel gives you an experience to remember.

Five and Dime Store

Attention to Detail

I’m all about attention to detail because it separates the good from the great. When we arrived to check into the hotel we were greeted with warm chocolate chip cookies and an upbeat staff. The lobby featured a nice magazine area with retro games such as a giant Connect 4, Life, Monopoly, Candy Land, Boggle, Battleship, Twister, and more. A Five and Dime store with retro games, toys, and trinkets such as a giant Betty Boop pez dispenser or Etch-A-Sketch to bring back memories.

Dun Dun Dunnnnn Floor

Inside The Curtis are 16 themed floors:

The 4th Floor – Perfect Pair Floor
The 5th Floor – One Hit Wonder Floor
The 6th Floor – Fun & Games Floor
The 8th Floor – Sci-Fi Floor (the pet friendly floor)
The 9th Floor – Big Hair Floor
The 10th Floor – Floor of Champions
The 11th Floor – Chick Flick Floor
The 12th Floor – Dance Floor
The 13th Floor – Dun Dun Dunnnnn!
The 14th Floor – TV Mania Floor
The 15th Floor – Mad About Music Floor
The 16th Floor – Pedal To The Metal

Barrel of Monkeys

When the elevator stops at a floor it plays a fun quirky message that alerts you to what floor it’s stopping on. Heather (@blendhappy) and I were on the ‘Fun & Games’ floor which played arcade sounds while stating, “Come on down, you’re on the 6th floor, the fun and games floor.” Outside the elevator we were greeted with a large red monkey wall hanging from Barrel of Monkeys. Do you remember those when you were a kid? Needless to say, exploring the various floors at The Curtis was a fun and memorable time that brought back memories.

Fun Features:

  • Wake up calls.  Every morning it was a random and hilarious wake-up call from the likes of Mr. T, Elvis, Austin Powers, Darth Vader, Yoda, Marilyn Monroe, and more.
  • Fun Door Hangers stating: “Dream On” “If this sign is a-rockin’ don’t bother knockin’!” or “What it was… What it is… What it shall be… QUIET!
  • Welcome gift that includes a retro game and candy. We got Pick Up Sticks and Pop Rocks. Score.
  • “Yo Ho ho and a bottle of Rum” pirate package that included breakfast for two and tickets to the “Real Pirates” exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Other packages available were: Pillow Talk, Curtis Culture Club, or Are you Crazy in Love?
  • Amazing staff. The Curtis will even designate a staff member to play board games with you if you lack a partner. The staff is also always up for a round of ‘Rock Paper Scissors’ as well.
  • Dogs are welcome up to 40lbs (but they’re flexible). Inside the front entrance there is a bowl of water along with photos of all the recent 4-legged guests.

Welcome Puppies!

Our kickass comfy bed!

The Room

Our room was spacious and had a king bed with comfortable bedding. I was happy to see that The Curtis washes all of the bedding after each guest. The staff was happy to bring up extra pillows and ice as needed to make my stay more comfortable given my recent surgery. There was a nice lounge area with a couch and table as well as a desk for working. The bathroom had a large shower and shampoos from Crabtree & Evelyn. The decor was modern and had quirky photos sprinkled through out the room. Did I mention they have free wifi too?

The Curtis is great for people who want a different and unique experience during their stay in downtown Denver. Their motto is, “Stay Happy” and that we did.

Disclosure: The Curtis Hotel graciously provided us with 2 nights of accommodation, a Pirate Package, and parking during our stay. This in no way influences my review of The Curtis Hotel. We had a very positive experience and we would definitely stay there again.

Barrel of Monkeys was one of my favourite games as a kid!

The Curtis looks wicked! I was looking for a cool hotel to stay in before TBEX next year and I think this will be added to the list to check out.
    Thanks Jenny! =)

Hospitality artisans! There are lots of things I don’t care for inherently (hotels, sports, hygiene…), but I can’t help but appreciate someone who has mastered the craft. Congrats on a great find, and kudos for paying it forward on your blog.

Glad you liked it Erin… The hotel was really fun and had loads of personality… you don’t see that very often anymore.

I KNOW! They were hilarious, “Get outta Bed Fool!”

Looks like a great place to say and love the theme floors and of course the comfy bed.  The Thoracic Outlet Syndrome sounds like a mouth full.  I think I heard about that when I was rear ended last year and kept having pains around my collar bone.

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Yeah TOS sucks. It’s not just pain in your collar bone. It’s your entire neck, shoulder, arm, and hand. You get electric nerve shots that shoot down your arm, you are hyper-sensitive to cold, and you have that pins and needles feeling constantly… that’s just to get started too. Anyways, my favorite part was the wake-up calls.

My wife hates those calls…lol!  She would rather stay in but since I’m already an early bird I don’t even bother.  TOS does sound like a pain in the butt!

Hey Jenny are you on another fanastic journey at this time?  I have seen and posts lately just wanted to stay up to date.  Also did you ever get your other site up and running?

That sounds like a fantasic idea for a hotel and a different theme on each floor means there is soething for everyone.

I wonder how the Sci-Fi theme is? And it’s pet friendly, a good thing for me.
