About Me

Full on punk rock! - Photo by: Mark Heibert

Hello and welcome to my digital home… I’m a graphic designer, photographer, skateboarder, writer, entrepreneur, world traveler, and student of life.

I’ve always had an insatiable curiosity about the world and understanding of myself. After a life of being trained to conform I decided to step outside the box to follow my heart. When I graduated college I didn’t want to have a job because I had other passions I wanted to pursue. I had decided that I would start my own business by freelancing my graphic design services.  Since then, I’ve been able to design my life in a way that suits whatever it is I want to do in that moment.  I’ve pursued everything from racing professional motocross to volunteering to world travel. I live in a constant state of fulfillment that a desk job could never give me.

My days of racing motocross!

I refuse to give up my life to a desk job for a mere 2-weeks of vacation a year if I’m even given that.  I don’t get the old way of thinking where you have to work your entire life in order to retire and then be able to do whatever it is you want to do. Why should I give up the best years of my life as being a physically and mentally capable human being to working when I could be doing it now? By the time I’ll get to retire I’ll be 70-something years old and not even capable of having the adventures I want to have. I’ll be left with something as exciting as… fishing (sorry Dad).

Catching snakes in Brazil

I want to be able to tell my grandkids that I didn’t follow the social norms and live a dull conventional life. But rather, found the Lost City in Colombia, swam with sea lions in the Galapagos, and got lost in the Amazon jungle.

I’m a girl who loves adventure and craves adrenaline rushes. Since I’ve turned 21 and cut the umbilical cord I’ve traveled to over 11 countries and 30 US states. Now I’m in the process of selling everything I own to live out of a backpack as I travel the world indefinitely.  I’m able to do this with my Location Independent graphic design business that allows me to work anywhere in the world with an internet connection.

Sitting on the rim of an active volcano as it explodes. One of my most amazing experiences to date.

This site is not only a journal of my thoughts and travels but a resource for location independent working, remarkable living, around the world travel, backpacking, and solo travel.  I hope that this site can assist and inspire others to lead a more fulfilling life. I only write from my own experiences and direct observations.

If you find my site valuable please pass it along to your friends and family. I want as many people as possible to live a remarkably awesome fulfilling life, just like me.

You can find my Bucket List here.

Random Facts about Jenny:

1. I’ve been self-employed since 2003 when I started my location independent graphic design business. I’ve worked from 12 countries and 10 US states and am taking the steps to be a full-time digital nomad by selling everything I own.

2. After backpacking South America for 5-months I became some-what fluent in Spanish. I also learned sign language in college and want to learn French so that I can have something in common with my nephews whom live in France.

3. Travel photography is a huge passion of mine and I hope to utilize that to make a passive income stream.

Backside Air at the Downtown Houston Skatepark

4. I dig skateboarding. I hope it digs me back. I’ll be taking my skateboard with me as I travel to see what skate parks the world has to offer.

5. I have an addiction to learning. I love to push my body and my mind to it’s limits and then some.

6. I’m allergic to mushrooms. Seriously.

I love this blog and am following you now! You’re definitely doing something I dream of. In 2007, I spent 3 months sailing around the world to 10 different countries and have never been the same since. When people ask me “aren’t you done with traveling for a while?” I have to ask “can you ever have enough sex?”

Right now, I’m doing “something new every day” for a blog…check it out!

Thanks Leah. Take one step everyday towards your dream and you’ll get there. I am with you, one can never travel enough!

Really, you need to work on your spelling and grammar or some people who would hire you will pass you by! Learn when to use ‘whom’ and figure out the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re’!

Jenny, your life sounds amazing. I’m currently pursuing the entrepreneurial world in an attempt to also become location independent and live on my own terms. After traveling extensively when I graduated from college, I couldn’t see any other way to live. No matter how many times it happens, it’s never any less inspiring to find other like-minded people. Glad I stumbled upon your site! Best of luck!

    • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Right on!!!! Rad people just congregate towards each other! Being Location Independent is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. I didn’t even have to work for corporate America to figure out that it sucked. Hope you’ll stick around.

    Great blog Jenny,
I travelled a lot when I was young, free and single and I want to install the same mentality in my kids. Travel broadens the mind, breathes air in to your life and excites. Your outlook on life is spot on, go out and enjoy everyday.
    Good luck & Best wishes

I’ve been following you for a few months now, but after reading your About Me finally, I’m even more in love with you. And secretly hoping your travels bring you to San Francisco, so I can take you out for a drink! You and my husband can talk dirt bikes–though he actually just sold his Honda after his annual Mojave trip translating into yet another broken bone for the third year in a row! =)

Awww thanks. I’ll be in San Fransisco around Spring. See you then. :)

Jenny….we have a lot in common. I know sign language too and love to travel and have been dreaming about quitting my desk job (that I just started 3 months ago) to become a digital nomad. I took baby steps and have started a blog on wordpress: http://changchangtravels.wordpress.com. I just came back from a 4-month backpacking solo trip and went to 16 countries. Hopefully I can accomplish what you are doing right now. Only downside is, how can one be successful at this if so many others are already doing it? After awhile, all the travel stories blend together…travel content becomes a commodity. Thoughts?

    • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Rock on. Nice blog! 16 countries in 4 months is quite the feat.

My thoughts? The interweb is a huge place. There are plenty of ways to find an audience that resonates with you, some more than others. The pie only gets bigger. I thought there wouldn’t be room for me either… I’ve only been here a few months, but already have a pretty good following. As long as you have a unique trait (and that can be anything different) and know what your message is then you’ll be fine.

Jenny, your passion rocks! As a Colombian born, living in the states since 6, I realize you know so much more about my homeland then mua (parcera!). That being said, many make choices based on circumstances while many many circumstances will define your choices.

More then likely you have much of your dad’s genes. It just so happens (like me at 38), that I have 3 great kids and wife. I look forward for my kids to do what you are doing! But I would hope my children don’t think I somehow compromised and just tend to do “things like Dad just fishing”, but instead realize that the best gifts are those unseen ;)

    • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Nothing wrong with fishing. I think that fishing relates to some of the things that I enjoy in different ways. My dad likes fishing alone because it gives him time alone with his thoughts, just the same that I like long bus rides. You really find who you are during that time. :)

How funny. I’m allergic to mushrooms too. You are the only other person I have ever met with that allergy. But beyond that, thank you for following your dream and giving the rest of us hope as we try to follow our own. After 8 years in the work force and constantly being annoyed and trying to stretch my 2 weeks of vacation a year, I have decided to call it quits and tackle the freelance world and also be with my son while he is cute and tiny and actually wants me around. Cheers to following your passions and not letting anyone keep you down or listen to those that say “you can’t do that!”

Just wanted to say “Thank you” for your blog and your site.  I’m a 32 year olf cubicle monkey who has recently really started soul searching as well. “Our things own us” verve is one on my mind a lot. Work 40 hours a week to buy things you definitely don’t need and are only convinced by media and peers that you want them.    Very interested in the ability to have a business that legally and for tax purposes is “mobile” as you describe. I have some research to do obviously.  I, myself, am an artsy-fartsy type who does everything from photographt to writing to jewelry making to upcycled arts and crafts to whatever is creative I can delve my little paws into. Your site gives me a little glimmer of hope that maybe one day I might grow a pair and do what i love instead of dredging through this existence only to die and rot. I wish you the absolute best of luck in all you do!!

    • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Thanks for stopping by! You have been sleepwalking, but now you have woken up! Follow your heart, you only get one life on this earth and it better be a kickass one. So decide what you want, and make it happen. ANYONE can do it, you just gotta hustle and make the right decisions and choices that bring you closer to your goal. Everyone has a skill-set they can utilize to make money online, it’s different for everyone. You could even make jewelry to sell on ETSY from materials you find on your travels. Who knows??? Unless you try.

    Jenny!
What an inspiring blog and work life! It resonated with me because I’m looking to travel more than the 2wk vacation time in a year. I’m 31, live in California and have been browsing travel blogs to get ideas on getting a job that involves traveling in Europe. I thought working in a hotel chain would be a start to possibly then transfer to another property in Europe. That’s looking like it will take months and the long way to get to Europe. Any ideas on types of jobs to take in Western Europe to move immediately?

    I’d appreciate it!

Keep those digital inspiring waves coming. Thank you for your blog. You make me realize that i’m missing a lot, waiting just watching my life slips trough my fingers. i will be following you and i decided that i should write all the things that i wanted to do and have been postponing them because i was just pissed off the work routine. Keep it it Jenny (Y)

  • Abby

Hi Jenny. :) I’ve recently found your blog and its made me very inspired to travel the world. Even though I’m only 14 I really want to travel when I’m older. I’ve been saving alot the past year and really hope my adventures can be something like yours. I might even try to start a blog this year, I’ve actually wanted to start one for a while now. Um we’ll see ya Jenny :) – Abby.

    • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Awesome Abby. Start saving now so that when you turn 18 you can take a trip wherever you want to go. I wish that I would have started traveling younger, so kudos for thinking about it now. Good luck and let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

    • Jure Grant Majnaric

This blog is inspiring, and so is your post Abby. If I could give you any advice, it would be NOT to wait until you’re 18 to travel. If you’re in High School, check out any and ALL opportunities to travel abroad as an exchange student. Looking back on this, I would’ve done it if I could (other things prevented me), as well as doing this while in college. 18 is a great year to start traveling, but no need to wait if you can experience the world a year from now. Good luck!

      • Abby

I would really love to be a exchange student in another country but my mum is way to strict for me to do anything like that so that’s why I’m saving so when I leave home and become an adult I can make my own decisions on what I want to do with my life.

This is awesome. I’m a graphic designe,r too! Still struggling with the idea of a “desk job” after I graduate. What you’ve done is definitely inspiring! I’m hoping I can make my passion for travel a permanent part of my life somehow, too.

    • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

Awesome! Keep me updated on your journey. I’m launching another site soon called Never North that is directed towards freelancers that want the freedom to live life on their terms. Be sure to check it out when it’s finished! : ]
